Last wildlife post from Costa Rica

Okay, my friends. If you look to your left, girls, you will see Zoo Ave, a wildlife rescue center and environmental education center. Sorry, whenever I am in an explaining mood this trip, I find myself speaking in the cadence of Mauricio, our tour guide from last Friday. And never mind that there were two gentlemen in our tour group; he was clearly addressing me and M the whole time. Us girls. At any rate, today's the day for the post about Zoo Ave and more fannish pairing of wildlife, as you do. :) Just a little disclaimer here: all the pictures I'm posting are from the part of the park that is open to the public. These are animals that, for whatever reason (sickness, overexposure, injury, etc.) cannot be returned to the wild. There are lots of signs throughout the park to educate people about the animals and the laws regarding trade in animals. None of these pics are from the adjacent wildlife rescue center, which is the part that actually pertains to my job. So without further ado, let's start w/ Tony Stark, the white-faced capuchin.

He's not afraid of voicing his opinion, this one!

A Fangirl in La Paz

Update number two from Costa Rica! We went to La Paz Waterfall Gardens yesterday, which is located on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. And on the way, we stopped at The Cheese Restaurant. That's not really what it's called, but that's what CD's family calls it, due to this incredible cheese tortilla they make there. It's like a stuffed tortilla, so still fairly thin, w/ additional cheese on top. I've had a lot of cheese this trip. Though I did finally have to confess that I don't like platanos (plaintains). At any rate, preview sloth and then on to the trip!

I don't know why I love you, but I do!

Update from Costa Rica -- pics

Greetings from Costa Rica!!! I figured the only way I'm going to get an account of my trip out there is if I do it piecemeal. And since I'm still functioning at two hours earlier than the rest of the country, I'm going to do it this morning while my friend/co-worker/hostess is still getting up and making a big traditional Costa Rican breakfast for us (hint: it will contain rice, beans, cheese and plaintains).

Yesterday we went on a tour of the Irazu Volcano (whose name basically means Thunder Mountain) and for a boat trip down the Saripiqui River (aka, Snake River -- for how it wends). We saw howler monkeys. Yeah, they're awesome. I shrunk down and zoomed in on this pic, the rest beneath the cut:

100 Things: Farmers' Market (#2)

So last year I decided to bite the bullet and start my own side business. I'd always loved cooking and baking, and people were always telling me I should sell my food. My typical response -- why would people buy this when they could make it themselves? But you know, baking is becoming something of a lost art. People don't take the time for it anymore, I suppose. For me, it's always been one of my favorite things to do. I love creating new flavors, the magical moment when all the ingredients you picked come together in a taste explosion in your mouth. Or something less dramatic. I had made vegan cupcakes for some co-workers for the holidays, and they had bought me a cookbook ("Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World"). Some of my favorites from there are the chocolate peanut butter, pistachio rosewater, pumpkin chocolate chip, and a few others that I've modified. It's also served as the basis for all my gluten-free recipes.

Happy National Cupcake Day!!!

Okay, peeps, long time no post. But today is National Cupcake Day, and though this isn't a *real* update post, b/c I'm still not done w/ that thing what I should have been done w/ weeks ago, I have to celebrate the day! So have some pics, and eat a cupcake. I have pumpkin in the oven RIGHT NOW!! I'm about to eat a vanilla chocolate chip RIGHT NOW!!

Come on, get happy!

Okay. I have decided that enough is enough. Let's pull Lloyd Doblers and just decide to be in good moods. But in case we need help, here's a post about stuff that makes me happy! And please do add stuff in the comments. Just as long as it doesn't intentionally shit on someone else (but if it's unintentional, eh, what you gonna do, yeah?). Happy item #1:

Rubber ducky, I love you! Chefs, angels, cowboys, and my favorites are behind the cut!

Five Questions & Who Wants Cookies?

The five questions meme! So you ask me for five questions, and then I ask you five questions. And we get to know each other better. Simple. (Then you post your answers and shit, and ask if anyone wants questions. That's how this works.)

Also, I made summer squash ratatouille, AND I got new cookbooks. I am looking for vegan cookie testers! zanyrainey, you are a lucky dog. I'm looking for two or three more across the continental U.S.
